14 – 20 Oct: Aussie Bird Count

The 2024 Aussie Bird Count is back from today’s 14th to 20 October 2024! The Aussie Bird Count aims to engage school communities in the natural world while getting to know the birds in their local schoolyard through participation in a simple, fun, all-ages activity that can be done anywhere.

By taking part in the Aussie Bird Count the students will become citizen scientists. Citizen science creates opportunities for students to connect with the natural world, gain scientific skills, and learn about topics such as life cycles, habitats, adaptations, and interrelationships.

This is your chance to be part of Australia’s biggest citizen science event, and it’s perfect for everyone, from experienced birdwatchers to total beginners! All you need to do is:

  • Register here
  • Download the Aussie Bird Count app on your phone
  • Pick a spot — your backyard, local park, or favourite outdoor space (you can even count from home!)
  • Enter your location in the app and start counting the birds you see in just 20 minutes. If you’re unsure about the species, our in-app bird finder is here to help!
  • Submit your count using the app or web form

It’s that simple! The Aussie Bird Count is the perfect way to connect with nature, contribute to citizen science, and celebrate Australia’s unique birdlife. And guess what? There are awesome prizes up for grabs, too!
