On Monday, 19 August, a group of 9 Senior boys, for the first time, visited Victoria Food Bank, an industrial food relief warehouse as part of Community Service Program organised by SRCs.
Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organisation, operating on a scale that makes it crucial to the work of the front-line charities that are feeding vulnerable Australians. Foodbank provides 77 million meals a year to more than 2,600 charities around the country, accounting for 79% of all food received by charities from food rescue organisations. It is the only charity in Australia that collaborates with suppliers, manufacturers, and transporters in an innovative program to ensure consistent supplies of essential food items are available in its warehouses every day.
Our Senior boys were given brief introduction on OHS and the tour of the Warehouse. They were provided steel capped safety boots, hi-vis and gloves for the activity. They assisted with tasks in the warehouse, such as physically sorting and packing food and groceries for Victoria Food Bank. Through this activity, they were able to pack items like breakfast cereals, long life milk, chips, biscuits, pasta and pasta sauce, canned fruit, baked beans and hygienic items. The boys generously gave their time to contribute to packed 2112 kilograms of food, 6 pallets, 660 boxes which covers 3605 meals for the community which is equivalent of feeding a family of 4, 3 meals a day for 300 days. These packed grocery boxes go across Victoria for use in charities meal programs, community pantries, soup vans and emergency hampers.
Well done to our Senior Boys for their volunteering service of giving back to the Victorian Community.
