Our Year 3 students recently took a fascinating journey back to 1870s Melbourne, where they experienced a school day from the past under the guidance of the stern yet knowledgeable Mrs Sargood of Rippon Lea Estate. Dressed in full period costume, Mrs Sargood (National Trust of Australia) stepped into the classroom, bringing history to life with her traditional teaching style and strict expectations.
Through engaging hands-on activities and lively discussions, students explored the stark contrasts between their modern education and the schooling of the Sargood children. They discovered how lessons were taught without technology, how discipline was enforced, and even how handwriting was carefully practised using ink and quills.
This immersive experience provided a unique glimpse into the past, allowing students to appreciate how far education has come while gaining a deeper understanding of history. It was a memorable and enjoyable learning adventure for all! And, of course, many students were quite relieved they didn’t have to write on chalkboards every day!
